Exports in Benelux
After eight years of growth, shipments abroad of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons decreased by -23.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium represented the major exporter of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons in Benelux, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), mixing up a 23% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports from Belgium stood at +9.6%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands increased by +2.6 percentage points.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.4%).

Imports in Benelux
In 2022, purchases abroad of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons decreased by -13.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports saw a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total imports.
The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons. Belgium (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons in Benelux, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands totaled +5.5%.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative import price increased by +2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
