Handmade Paper Market Size in Benelux

In 2021, the Benelux handmade paper market decreased by -11.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, handmade paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 154% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belgium was the key exporter of handmade paper and paperboard in Benelux, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), creating a 32% share of total exports.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of handmade paper and paperboard. At the same time, the Netherlands (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -11.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +3.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 130% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of handmade paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 24% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a noticeable increase. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the handmade paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. Belgium (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported handmade paper and paperboard in Benelux, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 8% share of total imports.

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 41% against the previous year.
