Malt Market Size in Benelux

In 2021, the Benelux malt market increased by 58% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +100.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Malt Production in Benelux

In value terms, malt production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +80.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 28%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports in Benelux

In 2021, shipments abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 29% share of total exports.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of malt (not roasted). At the same time, the Netherlands (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of the Netherlands (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Belgium (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in Benelux, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In Belgium, malt exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-1.1%).

Malt Imports

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, overseas purchases of malt (not roasted) increased by 34% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium represented the largest importer of malt (not roasted) in Benelux, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), committing a 39% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +0.5%).

In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Benelux were Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X).

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of -2.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
