Mattress Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux mattress market rose sharply to $X in 2022, with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a noticeable decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, mattress exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

The biggest shipments were from Belgium (X units) and the Netherlands (X units), together accounting for 100% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +3.4%).

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +1.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per unit.

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of mattresses, when their volume decreased by -36.4% to X units. Overall, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, mattress imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X units) represented the main importer of mattresses, making up 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X units), achieving a 21% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattresses imports, with a CAGR of +6.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Luxembourg (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands increased by +12 percentage points.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mattresses in Benelux, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
