In 2021, the Benelux non-alloy aluminium bar market decreased by -7.3% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In 2021, shipments abroad of non-alloy aluminium bars, rods and profiles increased by 71% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after six years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-alloy aluminium bar exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the main exporter of non-alloy aluminium bars, rods and profiles in Benelux, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), achieving a 33% share of total exports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-alloy aluminium bars, rods and profiles exports, with a CAGR of -3.6% from 2012 to 2021. Belgium (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the largest non-alloy aluminium bar supplier in Benelux, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands totaled +2.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-alloy aluminium bar export price increased by +16.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium stood at $X per ton.

Imports in Benelux

Non-alloy aluminium bar imports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, surging by 8% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 45%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-alloy aluminium bar imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 136% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importer of non-alloy aluminium bars, rods and profiles, mixing up 66% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) took a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Luxembourg (6.4%).

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -8.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Luxembourg (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+9.7 p.p.) and Luxembourg (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -14.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-alloy aluminium bars, rods and profiles in Benelux, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (-4.6% per year) and Luxembourg (+6.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
