In 2022, shipments abroad of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the key exporter of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing, comprising 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), creating a 24% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012-2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest seed, fruit and spore used for sowing supplier in Benelux, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In the Netherlands, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing declined by an average annual rate of -5.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep downturn. In 2022, purchases abroad of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing increased by 5.3% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), committing a 30% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to seed, fruit and spore used for sowing imports into the Netherlands stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Luxembourg (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium increased by +5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
