Dry Peas Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux dry peas market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a modest increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Dry Peas Production in Benelux

Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of peas (dry) were harvested in Benelux; which is down by -1.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 28%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the dry peas harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fourth consecutive year, Benelux recorded growth in shipments abroad of peas (dry), which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 156% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry peas exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 112% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), committing a 25% share of total exports.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Belgium (+37 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-35.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 31%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.8%).

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, purchases abroad of peas (dry) decreased by -5.5% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 63%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, dry peas imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Belgium was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), constituting a 35% share of total imports.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.
