Pigeon Peas Market Size in Benelux

After two years of growth, the Benelux pigeon peas market decreased by -16.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. In 2021, Belgium (X tons) was the main exporter of pigeon peas, making up 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), committing a 24% share of total exports.

In 2021, purchases abroad of pigeon peas increased by 3.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 1,087% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the import price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium amounted to $X per ton.
