For the fourth consecutive year, the Benelux preserved tomato market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 13% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved tomato production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 3,477% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Benelux recorded growth in shipments abroad of preserved tomatoes, which increased by 2.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 55%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the key exporter of preserved tomatoes in Benelux, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 16% share of total exports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the preserved tomatoes exports, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Netherlands (+20 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -18.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest preserved tomato supplier in Benelux, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands stood at +22.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 23%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.4%).

Imports in Benelux

Preserved tomato imports shrank to X tons in 2021, waning by -11.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 98% of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +1.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest preserved tomato importing markets in Benelux were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Luxembourg ($X), together accounting for 99.9% of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
