Quince Market Size in Benelux

In 2021, the Benelux quince market decreased by -5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Quince Production in Benelux

In value terms, quince production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons) remains the largest quince producing country in Benelux, comprising approx. 86% of total volume. Moreover, quince production in the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belgium (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in the Netherlands was relatively modest.

The average quince yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2021, remaining constant against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the quince yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The quince harvested area dropped modestly to X ha in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 8%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports in Benelux

For the third year in a row, Benelux recorded decline in shipments abroad of quinces, which decreased by -6.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quince exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of quinces, namely the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of quinces. While the share of the Netherlands (+6.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) also remains the largest quince supplier in Benelux.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the Netherlands.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the Netherlands amounted to -0.4% per year.

Quince Imports

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of quinces, when their volume decreased by -27.7% to X tons. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, quince imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 19% share of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +2.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belgium (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinces in Benelux, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +3.9%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.5%).
