Sheet Piling Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux sheet piling market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sheet Piling Production in Benelux

In value terms, sheet piling production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 70%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Benelux

In 2021, shipments abroad of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) increased by 16% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 53%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheet piling exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Luxembourg was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), achieving a 17% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Luxembourg decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.7%) and Belgium (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Luxembourg saw its share reduced by -12% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Luxembourg ($X) remains the largest sheet piling supplier in Benelux, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Luxembourg, sheet piling exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+13.2% per year) and Belgium (+3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheet piling imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands represented the key importer of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) in Benelux, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), comprising a 33% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) in Benelux, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
