Skim Milk Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux skim milk market rose notably to $X in 2021, surging by 7.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. In 2021, the amount of skim milk exported in Benelux dropped to X tons, reducing by -8.7% against the year before. In general, exports showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) was the key exporter of skim milk, mixing up 75% of total exports. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Luxembourg (5.2%).

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Luxembourg (+40.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands and Luxembourg increased by +62 and +5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest skim milk supplying countries in Benelux were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Luxembourg ($X).

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 53%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Benelux

For the third consecutive year, Benelux recorded growth in overseas purchases of skim milk, which increased by 44% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 68%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, skim milk imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 113%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Belgium represented the key importer of skim milk in Benelux, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), making up a 26% share of total imports.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the skim milk imports, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012 to 2021. The Netherlands (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium increased by +59 percentage points.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in Benelux, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -20.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a prominent increase.
