In 2021, the Benelux soft drink market decreased by -12.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption showed a perceptible descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of soft drinks increased by 14% to X litres, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, soft drink exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +68.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

The Netherlands represented the key exporting country with an export of around X litres, which recorded 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X litres), achieving a 38% share of total exports. Luxembourg (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest soft drink supplier in Benelux, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In the Netherlands, soft drink exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+1.4% per year) and Luxembourg (+12.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per litre in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Luxembourg ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

For the sixth consecutive year, Benelux recorded growth in overseas purchases of soft drinks, which increased by 6.6% to X litres in 2021. Overall, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X litres) and the Netherlands (X litres) prevails in imports structure, together creating 93% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Luxembourg (X litres), mixing up a 6.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

In terms of the main importing countries, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +4.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Benelux amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
