Sparkling Wine Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux sparkling wine market declined sharply to $X in 2022, reducing by -26.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of sparkling wine decreased by -19.6% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 121%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 117%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X litres) and the Netherlands (X litres) were the key exporters of sparkling wine in 2022, accounting for near 46% and 38% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Luxembourg (X litres), mixing up a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sparkling wine supplying countries in Benelux were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Luxembourg ($X).

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +10.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per litre, waning by -20.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Luxembourg ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Luxembourg (-1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of sparkling wine imported in Benelux contracted remarkably to X litres, which is down by -29.1% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Belgium was the main importer of sparkling wine in Benelux, with the volume of imports resulting at X litres, which was near 62% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 30% share, followed by Luxembourg (7.2%).

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sparkling wine. At the same time, the Netherlands (+5.2%) and Luxembourg (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Netherlands (+9.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-9.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +4.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
