Sugary Soft Drink Market Size in Benelux

In 2022, the Benelux sugary soft drink market decreased by -5.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X litres of sugary soft drinks were exported in Benelux; with an increase of 28% on 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +118.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the major exporter of sugary soft drinks in Benelux, with the volume of exports reaching X litres, which was near 78% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X litres), constituting a 21% share of total exports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugary soft drinks exports, with a CAGR of +9.7% from 2012 to 2022. Belgium (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+26 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-27.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in Benelux, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In the Netherlands, sugary soft drink exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per litre, waning by -14.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.2%).

Imports in Benelux

After eight years of growth, purchases abroad of sugary soft drinks decreased by -13.9% to X litres in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 93% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Luxembourg (X litres), achieving a 6.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 99.9% of total imports.

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +6.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per litre), while the Netherlands ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
