In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Benelux concrete tile market, when its value increased by 20% to $X. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -20.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 59% against the previous year. After two years of growth, shipments abroad of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -17.9% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, concrete tile exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +15.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the largest exporter of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Benelux, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 28% share of total exports. Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone exports, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Luxembourg (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belgium (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+24 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-24 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -21% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, imports saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concrete tile imports declined notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the key importers of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Benelux, together accounting for near 86% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Luxembourg (X tons), committing a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +0.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
