Non-mineral or non-aerated water exports expanded significantly to X litres in 2021, picking up by 8.7% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Based on 2021 figures, non-mineral or non-aerated water export price increased by +75.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Luxembourg ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, approx. X litres of non-mineral or non-aerated waters were imported in Benelux; surging by 12% against 2020. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X litres) represented the major importer of non-mineral or non-aerated waters, making up 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X litres), generating a 23% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X litres) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Luxembourg (+42.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +42.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+5 p.p.) and Luxembourg (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belgium (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +9.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per thousand litres in 2021, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 47%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per thousand litres), while the Netherlands ($X per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
