In value terms, production of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +106.4% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Benelux

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, when their volume decreased by -23.2% to X litres. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the major exporter of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in Benelux, with the volume of exports finishing at X litres, which was approx. 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X litres), committing a 24% share of total exports. Luxembourg (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages. At the same time, Luxembourg (+29.5%) and Belgium (+22.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium and Luxembourg increased by +20 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 84%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per litre), while Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X litres of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages were imported in Benelux; rising by 20% against 2021. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +116.9% against 2014 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands represented the key importing country with an import of around X litres, which recorded 58% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X litres) and Luxembourg (X litres), together achieving a 42% share of total imports.
