Wheat Gluten Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux wheat gluten market contracted sharply to $X in 2022, shrinking by -34.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption faced a deep contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 2,663%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 2,752%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium was the largest exporter of wheat gluten in Benelux, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 27% share of total exports.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wheat gluten. At the same time, the Netherlands (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium increased by +73 percentage points.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest wheat gluten supplier in Benelux, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 10%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Benelux

In 2022, overseas purchases of wheat gluten decreased by -29% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands was the largest importer of wheat gluten in Benelux, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 31% share of total imports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat gluten imports, with a CAGR of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. Belgium (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+6.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
