Plastic Bag Market Size in Bolivia

The Bolivian plastic bag market fell slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +1.7% against 2020 indices. Overall, the total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Plastic bag production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Bolivia

Plastic bag exports from Bolivia fell remarkably to X tons in 2022, declining by -53.2% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 368%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 410% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cuba (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from Bolivia, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to Cuba exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Honduras (X tons), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cuba amounted to +219.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+44.1% per year) and Honduras (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Honduras ($X), Cuba ($X) and Peru ($X) constituted the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Bolivia worldwide, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Cuba, with a CAGR of +146.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 98% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt descent. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Paraguay (+233.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Bolivia

In 2022, purchases abroad of plastic sacks and bags increased by 37% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 62%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic bag imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Bolivia, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +18.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Peru ($X), Brazil ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest plastic bag suppliers to Bolivia, together comprising 77% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Peru, with a CAGR of +16.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+17.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
