In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 281%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for aromatic alcohols exports from Brazil, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, aromatic alcohols exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Colombia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uruguay (X tons), with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Argentina amounted to +29.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+14.1% per year) and Uruguay (+80.2% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for aromatic alcohols and their derivatives exports from Brazil, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Argentina totaled +34.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+15.8% per year) and the United States (+23.8% per year).

In 2021, the average aromatic alcohols export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -28.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, overseas purchases of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives increased by 2.3% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 35%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of aromatic alcohols imports to Brazil, together comprising 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest aromatic alcohols suppliers to Brazil, together accounting for 70% of total imports.
