In 2021, the Brazilian artificial corundum market increased by 31% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild descent. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of artificial corundum increased by 7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 583%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial corundum exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 365% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for artificial corundum exports from Brazil, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, artificial corundum exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. Argentina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest artificial corundum supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, artificial corundum imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bahrain (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bahrain (-7.4% per year) and the United States (+19.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of artificial corundum to Brazil, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 12% share.
