Asbestos Market Size in Brazil

In 2022, the Brazilian asbestos market decreased by -12% to $X, falling for the eighth consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption showed a dramatic contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Brazil

In 2022, overseas shipments of asbestoses increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 172%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, asbestos exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 150%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) was the main destination for asbestos exports from Brazil, with a 89% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India stood at +10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+55.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+14.3% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for asbestoses exports from Brazil, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to India amounted to +6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+66.2% per year) and Sri Lanka (+11.8% per year).

The average asbestos export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($X per ton) and Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth year in a row, Brazil recorded growth in supplies from abroad of asbestoses, which increased by 260% to X tons in 2017. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, asbestos imports skyrocketed to $X in 2017. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2017, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2017, Russia (X tons) was the main asbestos supplier to Brazil, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
