Barley Market Size in Brazil

In 2022, the Brazilian barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, the average barley yield in Brazil dropped to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -2.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In 2022, shipments abroad of barley decreased by -76.1% to X kg, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, exports showed a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 6,703,772%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barley exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 2,776,509% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Liberia (X kg) was the main destination for barley exports from Brazil, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Liberia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Marshall Islands (X kg), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bahamas (X kg), with a 12% share.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Liberia stood at -57.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Marshall Islands (+132.1% per year) and Bahamas (+18.2% per year).

In value terms, Liberia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for barley exports from Brazil, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Marshall Islands ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahamas, with an 11% share.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Liberia totaled -42.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Marshall Islands (+162.3% per year) and Bahamas (+93.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 145% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a significant increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahamas (+64.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil

In 2022, supplies from abroad of barley was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Argentina (X tons) was the main barley supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina amounted to +10.4%.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Brazil, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The average barley import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Uruguay totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
