In 2021, the Brazilian basic dye market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, basic dye production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 45%. Basic dye production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of basic dyes and preparations based thereon decreased by -32.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 198%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, basic dye exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Colombia (X tons) was the main destination for basic dye exports from Brazil, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, basic dye exports to Colombia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Colombia amounted to +27.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+131.3% per year) and the United States (+70.0% per year).
In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the key foreign market for basic dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Brazil, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Colombia stood at +37.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+38.8% per year) and South Africa (+86.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average basic dye export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 35%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Argentina (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
In 2021, imports of basic dyes and preparations based thereon into Brazil expanded slightly to X tons, surging by 4.9% compared with 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +34.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, basic dye imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of basic dye imports to Brazil, together comprising 95% of total imports. Turkey and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 2.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +71.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Mexico ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest basic dye suppliers to Brazil, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Turkey and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.6%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +60.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average basic dye import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+17.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
