Carbonate Market Size in Brazil

In 2021, the Brazilian carbonate market decreased by -1.9% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of carbonates and peroxocarbonates were exported from Brazil; growing by 11% compared with the previous year. Overall, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for carbonate exports from Brazil, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, carbonate exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Paraguay (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uruguay (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina amounted to -4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Paraguay (+14.2% per year) and Uruguay (+5.0% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X), the United States ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for carbonate exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 46% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +94.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average carbonate export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 9.9%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, carbonate imports into Brazil stood at X tons, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, carbonate imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 17%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Brazil, together accounting for 94% of total imports.
