Carob Market Size in Brazil

After two years of growth, the Brazilian carob market decreased by -9.1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of carob, when their volume decreased by -78.4% to X kg. Overall, exports faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 504%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X kg in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, carob exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a precipitous curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 147%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

China (X kg) was the main destination for carob exports from Brazil, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, carob exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X kg), threefold. Bahamas (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to -15.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+0.9% per year) and Bahamas (+24.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for carob exports from Brazil, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to -24.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average carob export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 72% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahamas ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, supplies from abroad of carob decreased by -23.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 841% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carob imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 1,012%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest carob supplier to Brazil, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, carob imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), twofold. Algeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+12.8% per year) and Algeria (+29.7% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Brazil, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain totaled +14.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+17.3% per year) and Algeria (+27.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average carob import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
