Cocoa Butter Market Size in Brazil
In 2022, the Brazilian cocoa butter market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. Cocoa butter consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa butter production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Brazil
In 2022, shipments abroad of cocoa butter decreased by -27.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cocoa butter exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for cocoa butter exports from Brazil, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, cocoa butter exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Chile (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina totaled +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-5.2% per year) and Chile (+5.3% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X), the United States ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for cocoa butter exported from Brazil worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports.
Chile, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cocoa butter export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cocoa Butter Imports
Imports into Brazil
In 2022, overseas purchases of cocoa butter increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 203% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cocoa butter imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 160%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Peru (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of cocoa butter imports to Brazil, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cocoa butter suppliers to Brazil were Peru ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.
Peru, with a CAGR of +28.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average cocoa butter import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -9.6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cocoa butter import price decreased by -29.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 43% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
