In 2021, exports of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates from Brazil stood at X tons, approximately mirroring the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 11%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coffee extract exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons) was the main destination for coffee extract exports from Brazil, accounting for a 16% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee extract exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), twofold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-2.5% per year) and Japan (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), Russia ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 34% share of total exports. Argentina, Indonesia, Ukraine, the UK, Singapore, Chile, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Peru and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Peru, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average coffee extract export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 13%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Coffee Extract Imports
Imports into Brazil
In 2021, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates increased by 30% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coffee extract imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest coffee extract supplier to Brazil, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee extract imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +166.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+9.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.9% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest coffee extract suppliers to Brazil, with a combined 65% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Ecuador and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +154.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
