Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, contact lense exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 48%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units) was the main destination for contact lense exports from Brazil, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, contact lense exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X units), tenfold. The Netherlands (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to -2.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-2.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-11.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for contact lenses exports from Brazil, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 3.7% share.

Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, contact lense imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42%.
