Grapefruit Market Size in Brazil

The Brazilian grapefruit market declined slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. Grapefruit production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of grapefruits in Brazil stood at X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. In 2022, overseas shipments of grapefruits decreased by -0.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 472%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 495% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Liberia (X tons), Marshall Islands (X tons) and Singapore (X kg) were the main destinations of grapefruit exports from Brazil, together accounting for 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Argentina, Panama, Denmark, Malta, Cyprus, Hong Kong SAR, Bahamas and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2018 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Liberia ($X), Marshall Islands ($X) and Denmark ($X) constituted the largest markets for grapefruit exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 34% share of total exports. Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, Malta, Panama, Bahamas, Argentina, Portugal and Cyprus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of 0.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average grapefruit export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 3.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2018 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (-9.6%).

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of grapefruits, when their volume increased by 26% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest grapefruit supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+1.8% per year) and Egypt (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruits to Brazil, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-2.0% per year) and Egypt (0.0% per year).
