Hardboard Market Size in Brazil
In 2022, the Brazilian hardboard market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. Hardboard consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hardboard production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 3.5% against the previous year. Hardboard production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Brazil
In 2022, overseas shipments of hardboard decreased by -26% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21%. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hardboard exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States (X cubic meters) was the main destination for hardboard exports from Brazil, accounting for a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, hardboard exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Dominican Republic (X cubic meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Israel (X cubic meters), with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (+5.4% per year) and Israel (+0.9% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for hardboard exports from Brazil, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Costa Rica, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States amounted to +2.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (+6.7% per year) and Costa Rica (+20.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average hardboard export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Costa Rica ($X per cubic meter) and South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per cubic meter) and Jamaica ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of hardboard, when their volume decreased by -74.9% to X cubic meters. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hardboard imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of hardboard to Brazil, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, hardboard imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X cubic meters), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X cubic meters), with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+16.7% per year) and China (-20.4% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hardboard to Brazil, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-13.2% per year) and Austria (+21.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average hardboard import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, jumping by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a buoyant increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the price for France ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
