Market Size for Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in Brazil

The Brazilian market for horse, mule and donkey meat expanded significantly to $X in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. Horse, mule and donkey meat consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 80%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

China (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of horse, mule and donkey meat exports from Brazil, with a combined 84% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, Germany, Russia, Vietnam and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +422.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for horse, mule and donkey meat exported from Brazil were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, Germany, Russia, Vietnam and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +356.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
