Maize Market Size in Brazil

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Brazilian maize market, when its value decreased by -26.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption saw a perceptible slump. Egypt, Colombia, South Korea, Vietnam, Mexico, Taiwan (Chinese), Saudi Arabia, China, Italy and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iran ($X), Spain ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for maize exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 39% share of total exports. Egypt, Colombia, South Korea, Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), Saudi Arabia, China, Portugal and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average maize export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Iran ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Maize Imports

Imports into Brazil

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of maize decreased by -17.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 776%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, maize imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 1,108%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Paraguay (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Paraguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Paraguay amounted to +11.1%.

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Brazil, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +55.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 57%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay amounted to $X per ton.
