In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. In 2021, the amount of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exported from Brazil surged to X tons, increasing by 178% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 931%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, molluscs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 753%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Brazil, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Panama (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Marshall Islands (X tons), with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +44.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (+70.5% per year) and Marshall Islands (+96.8% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from Brazil, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Marshall Islands ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Panama, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +44.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Marshall Islands (+94.8% per year) and Panama (+52.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 46%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
In 2021, purchases abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) decreased by -4.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -38.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Peru (X tons), China (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to Brazil, together comprising 92% of total imports. Portugal, Ecuador and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.1%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +13.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Brazil, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru stood at +11.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-3.3% per year) and Argentina (-3.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average molluscs import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
