In 2021, the Brazilian natural polymers market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In 2021, approx. X tons of natural and modified natural polymers in primary forms were exported from Brazil; picking up by 7.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, natural polymers exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) were the main destinations of natural polymers exports from Brazil, together comprising 69% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Paraguay, France, Bolivia, the United States and Spain, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +60.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for natural and modified natural polymers in primary forms exports from Brazil, comprising 57% of total exports. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, natural polymers imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of natural polymers to Brazil, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, natural polymers imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), threefold. The average natural polymers import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
