Non-Wheat Flour Market Size in Brazil

After two years of decline, the Brazilian non-wheat flour market increased by 7.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Non-wheat flour consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Non-Wheat Flour Production in Brazil

In value terms, non-wheat flour production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Brazil

In 2021, approx. X tons of non-wheat flours were exported from Brazil; with a decrease of -39.3% compared with 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +39.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Venezuela (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat flour exports from Brazil, together comprising 90% of total exports. Congo and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.7%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +289.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for non-wheat flour exported from Brazil were Venezuela ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports. These countries were followed by Congo and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 6.7%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +248.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average non-wheat flour export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Congo (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, non-wheat flour imports into Brazil reduced to X tons, declining by -11.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 100%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flour to Brazil, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat flour imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +86.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+15.1% per year) and France (+29.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flours to Brazil, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +49.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+19.6% per year) and France (+21.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-wheat flour import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat flour import price decreased by -12.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
