P-Xylene Market Size in Brazil

After three years of growth, the Brazilian p-xylene market decreased by -4.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Korea ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (-1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, supplies from abroad of p-xylene decreased by -0.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 881%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, p-xylene imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 386%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest p-xylene supplier to Brazil, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, p-xylene imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. Saint Lucia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +43.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+86.9% per year) and Saint Lucia (0.0% per year).
