Exports from Brazil
After three years of decline, overseas shipments of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 6.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -40.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Brazil, with a 92% share of total exports. It was followed by France (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Argentina amounted to -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+143.7% per year) and Peru (-32.5% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Brazil, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 0.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Argentina amounted to +4.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+164.5% per year) and Peru (-27.0% per year).

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports into Brazil
Paper and paperboard imports into Brazil fell notably to X tons in 2022, declining by -32% compared with the previous year. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 331%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 232% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to Brazil, with a combined 86% share of total imports. The United States, Sweden, the UK and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +113.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price decreased by -24.1% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 60%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
