Photographic Paper Market Size in Brazil

For the fourth consecutive year, the Brazilian photographic paper market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -20.2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a deep contraction. Photographic paper consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic paper production shrank notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 618%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles, when their volume increased by 22% to X square meters. In general, exports, however, saw a sharp slump. The exports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Argentina (X square meters), Paraguay (X square meters) and Peru (X square meters) were the main destinations of photographic paper exports from Brazil, together accounting for 93% of total exports.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), Peru ($X) and Paraguay ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for photographic paper exported from Brazil worldwide, together accounting for 93% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Peru, with a CAGR of -11.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average photographic paper export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Brazil

For the third year in a row, Brazil recorded decline in purchases abroad of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles, which decreased by -15.1% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 3.1%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, photographic paper imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X square meters) constituted the largest photographic paper supplier to Brazil, with a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X square meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X square meters), with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at -7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-12.0% per year) and China (-14.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles to Brazil, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled -10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-16.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-34.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average photographic paper import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24%. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per square meter), while the price for China ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+30.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
