For the seventh consecutive year, Brazil recorded growth in shipments abroad of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, which increased by 8.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +71.9% against 2013 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip from Brazil, with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Colombia, Spain, Paraguay, Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala, Germany and Bolivia, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +36.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), the United States ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 56% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Germany, which together accounted for a further 33%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +34.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uruguay (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, approx. X tons of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip were imported into Brazil; rising by 7.6% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip to Brazil, with a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. Peru (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-3.1% per year) and Peru (+6.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip suppliers to Brazil, with a combined 46% share of total imports. Israel, Peru, Italy, Thailand, India, Uruguay, Argentina, Taiwan (Chinese), Chile and Colombia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average import price for plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
