In 2022, shipments abroad of recovered paper increased by 60% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 177% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, recovered paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 169%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Paraguay (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) were the main destinations of recovered paper exports from Brazil, together accounting for 83% of total exports. Kenya, Switzerland, India and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +263.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for recovered paper exported from Brazil were Bolivia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Paraguay ($X), together comprising 77% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +78.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average recovered paper export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 58% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of recovered paper decreased by -76.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 677%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, recovered paper imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 982% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of recovered paper to Brazil, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, recovered paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Paraguay (X tons), with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +31.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+16.4% per year) and Paraguay (+0.7% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of recovered paper to Brazil, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +27.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+20.5% per year) and Honduras (+89.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average recovered paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
