Paddy Rice Market Size in Brazil
The Brazilian paddy rice market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a mild slump. Paddy rice consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Paddy Rice Production in Brazil
In value terms, paddy rice production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2021, the average yield of paddy rice in Brazil contracted modestly to X tons per ha, which is down by -4.2% against 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average paddy rice yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The paddy rice harvested area in Brazil stood at X ha in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 3.2% against the previous year. The paddy rice harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Brazil
In 2021, approx. X tons of paddy rice were exported from Brazil; shrinking by -54.9% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 614%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 527% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Costa Rica (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main destinations of paddy rice exports from Brazil, together comprising 83% of total exports. These countries were followed by Nicaragua, the Netherlands and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +22,336.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for paddy rice exported from Brazil were Costa Rica ($X), Venezuela ($X) and Nicaragua ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports. Mexico, the Netherlands and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +13,664.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average paddy rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Paddy Rice Imports
Imports into Brazil
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of paddy rice decreased by -60.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, paddy rice imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 283%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Paraguay (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Brazil, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, paddy rice imports from Paraguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guyana (X tons), fivefold. Uruguay (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Paraguay totaled +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guyana (+108.9% per year) and Uruguay (-6.2% per year).
In value terms, Paraguay ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Brazil, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guyana ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Paraguay totaled +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guyana (+114.0% per year) and Uruguay (+0.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
