Rice Market Size in Brazil

For the third consecutive year, the Brazilian rice market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the market value increased by 6.8%. Rice consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Rice Production in Brazil

In value terms, rice production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of rice in Brazil stood at X tons per ha, growing by 4.4% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the average rice yield hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of rice production in Brazil stood at X ha, almost unchanged from 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. The rice harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Brazil

In 2021, the amount of rice exported from Brazil fell sharply to X tons, which is down by -39% compared with 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 133%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rice exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Venezuela (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from Brazil, with a combined 38% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Costa Rica, Peru, Gambia, Cuba, the United States, Sierra Leone, Mexico and Nicaragua, which together accounted for a further 53%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +153.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for rice exported from Brazil were Peru ($X), Venezuela ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 40% share of total exports. Senegal, Gambia, Cuba, Costa Rica, the United States, Sierra Leone, Nicaragua and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +141.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Imports

Imports into Brazil

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of rice decreased by -22.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 103%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, rice imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Paraguay (X tons) constituted the largest rice supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, rice imports from Paraguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X tons), fourfold. Argentina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Paraguay stood at +10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-7.3% per year) and Argentina (-15.2% per year).

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Brazil, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Paraguay totaled +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-7.5% per year) and Argentina (-14.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average rice import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Argentina ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Guyana ($X per ton) and Paraguay ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
