Sorbitol Market Size in Brazil

For the fourth consecutive year, the Brazilian sorbitol market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Sorbitol Exports

Exports from Brazil

In 2021, overseas shipments of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) decreased by -51.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 4,880%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorbitol exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 6,800%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for sorbitol exports from Brazil, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, sorbitol exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Colombia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina amounted to +143.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+92.8% per year) and Mexico (-93.9% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) exports from Brazil, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Argentina stood at +122.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+35.9% per year) and Mexico (-94.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average sorbitol export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 39%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uruguay (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Sorbitol Imports

Imports into Brazil

For the fourth year in a row, Brazil recorded decline in overseas purchases of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol), which decreased by -17.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 21%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorbitol imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sorbitol to Brazil, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, sorbitol imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to -30.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-4.8% per year) and Italy (-2.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest sorbitol suppliers to Brazil, together accounting for 88% of total imports.

The United States, with a CAGR of +3.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sorbitol import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 51%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
