Container Market Size in Brazil

In 2022, the Brazilian container market decreased by -1.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Container consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Brazil

In 2022, shipments abroad of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by 41% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 49%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, container exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X units) was the main destination for container exports from Brazil, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, container exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Peru (X units), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina stood at +25.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+35.5% per year) and Peru (+93.6% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X), the United States ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for container exported from Brazil worldwide, together comprising 65% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Peru, with a CAGR of +86.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average container export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -32.3% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, container imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest container supplier to Brazil, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, container imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Argentina (X units), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+19.1% per year) and Argentina (+5.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest container suppliers to Brazil were China ($X), Germany ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Italy, Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, Chile and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.6%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +1,196.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average container import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Costa Rica ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
