Tomato Market Size in Brazil

The Brazilian tomato market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, surging by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Tomato Production in Brazil

In value terms, tomato production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 339% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of tomatoes in Brazil dropped to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. In 2021, tomato exports from Brazil dropped sharply to X tons, declining by -68.5% on 2020. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4,352% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports plummeted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 4,124% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Paraguay (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato exports from Brazil, with a combined 89% share of total exports. Marshall Islands and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.4%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Liberia (with a CAGR of +78.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomato exports from Brazil, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Argentina amounted to +64.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+34.2% per year) and Paraguay (+84.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 121%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, purchases abroad of tomatoes decreased by -34.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,009% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 832%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Argentina (X tons) was the main tomato supplier to Brazil, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina stood at -6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+40.1% per year) and Peru (-32.5% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Brazil, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina stood at -4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+17.5% per year) and Peru (-23.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
