Vegetable Market Size in Brazil
For the third year in a row, the Brazilian vegetable market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by X% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight contraction. Vegetable consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Vegetable Production in Brazil
In value terms, vegetable production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. Vegetable production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The average yield of vegetables in Brazil declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by X%. The vegetable yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of vegetables production in Brazil totaled X ha, remaining constant against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by X%. The vegetable harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of vegetables decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, vegetable exports expanded to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable exports from Brazil, together comprising X% of total exports. Argentina, Paraguay, Canada, Belgium and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest markets for vegetable exported from Brazil worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports. Argentina, Canada, Belgium, Italy and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Paraguay (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
In 2022, purchases abroad of vegetables was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, vegetable imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest vegetable supplier to Brazil, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), sevenfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (X% per year) and China (X% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetables to Brazil, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (X% per year) and Chile (X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average vegetable import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by X%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
