Worked Slate Market Size in Brazil

In 2022, the Brazilian worked slate market increased by 3.8% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a noticeable reduction. In 2022, overseas shipments of worked slate decreased by -7.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, worked slate exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for worked slate exports from Brazil, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, worked slate exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK stood at +6.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+7.5% per year) and France (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for worked slate exported from Brazil were the UK ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Chile, Ireland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Among the main countries of destination, Ireland, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average worked slate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil

In 2022, overseas purchases of worked slate decreased by -63.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 104%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked slate imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 127%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to Brazil, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+8.9% per year) and Spain (-6.6% per year).

Overall, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
