Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 322%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk fabric exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a precipitous slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 409% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Argentina (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from Brazil, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Costa Rica (X square meters), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina amounted to -19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-14.6% per year) and Costa Rica (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from Brazil, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Argentina amounted to -21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-9.1% per year) and Chile (+20.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average silk fabric export price amounted to $X per square meter, with a decrease of -37.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 80%. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Costa Rica ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+22.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, faced a dramatic descent. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X square meters) was the main silk fabric supplier to Brazil, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy (X square meters), with a 1.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -24.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-35.0% per year) and India (-41.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste to Brazil, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 1.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -23.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-37.1% per year) and India (-42.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average silk fabric import price amounted to $X per square meter, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while the price for India ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
